Lycoming R-680 210 hp 9-cylinder radial engine. This R-680 was flown in a Boeing-Stearman PT-13. The “Stearman” was a primary trainer for the United States Army Air Forces and the United States Navy. More WWII pilots started their initial pilot training in a Stearman than any other aircraft.
Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp 600hp Supercharged 9-cylinder radial engine. This R-1340 was flown in a CAF T6 Harvard . The T6 was an advanced WWII trainer and also used in combat roles. The R-1340 is a powerful and reliable powerplant used in many types of Military aircraft and even Race planes including Gee Bee and Howard DGA. Today they are still flying in many aircraft including the T6 Texan and the de Havilland Otter.
Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Jr 450hp Supercharged 9-cylinder radial engine. The R-985 is a powerful and reliable powerplant used in many types of Military and civilian aircraft. Today they are still flying in de Havilland Beavers, Gruman Goose and heavily modified aerobatic stunt planes.
Wright R-1820-97 Cyclone 1200 hp Turbo-Supercharged 9-cylinder radial engine. This R1820 was manufactured at the Studebaker motor company and was part of a B17E/F/G Flying Fortress. The engine is unique because of the six bolt rocker covers. The B-17 began operations in 1941 in Europe and was the first high altitude precision heavy bomber. The Fortress was symbolic of the United States air power in Europe in WWII.
Continental A-65 65hp 4-cylinder engine. The A-65 was used in a Vintage Piper Cub. The “Cub” invokes comparison to the Model T Ford for aircraft. It’s affordability and popularity made it the first aircraft many people could afford. Many still fly today 80 years+ later.
Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp 1200hp Turbo-Supercharged 14-cylinder radial engine. Originally powering the Consolidated B-24 Liberator heavy bomber, F4F Wildcat and the Douglas DC-3 transport. Many R-1830’s are still flying today on DC-3’s and the PBY Catalina.
